we want to stay 2-3 nights in york and 3-4 nights in scotland. is it better to take the train or rent a car? is it hard to find parking in these cities?

Parking is impossible in London and not so difficult in York or Scotland. The point about taking the train from London to York and then York to Edinburgh is that it is faster than driving and you will see far more from the train window than you will from the road. If you want to venture into rural Scotland and its gorgeous landscape pick up your hire car in Edinburgh

The cheapest rail tickets are those booked well in advance for specifically timed trains. Booking opens 11 weeks before your journey.

London Kings Cross to York takes 2 hours and there are trains every 30 minutes

York to Edinburgh takes 2 hours 30 minutes with generally 2 trains per hour

To collect advance purchase rail tickets from the station you will need your booking reference number and the same credit card you used online

If you are planning to do many rail journeys in Britain a Britrail Pass will probably be the best deal

Parking is impossible in London as it driving if you are a foreigner. Scotland is a big place so you need to decide what you want to see but the big cities in Scotland have the same parking and driving issues as London so I would use the train or even fly to Scotland and then use public transport.

Don't consider using a car in London. It's congested and expensivre to park (if you can find a space). There is also a congestion charge in the centre. The public transport system is very good and can take tyou asnywhere you want to go.

No one drives in London. Expensive madness.

Scotland is a country not a city.

Parking in central Edinburgh and Glasgow is a nightmare, parking in Oban is easy.

Train. Using a car is insane

I'd say the train but book well in advance it is crazy expensive otherwise.
