But be aware that most stores, cafes and restaurants will not take this card. Visa and MasterCard are the widely used debit and credit cards in Europe so, use your bank Visa or MasterCard, or get a pre-paid Visa card that you can top up.

Lots of places in Europe don't take American Express. I had that problem recently in England. Don't count on it. But check and see if there are still American Express offices that will give you advances on your card- they used to be in all the major cities.
Going to Madrid, Spain in November.. counting on my AMEX to help me thru the whole process as i wont have too much cash handy.
Anyone knows if AMEX is widely accepted in the Madrid area?
