Here's the thing about a lot of what people call "racism"- it's really classism. That is, people who are on the top levels of society are often fearful that those on the bottom will try to take what they have- jobs, power, influence, etc. So a lot of the prejudice is directed at people living in the country, not people from outside. Delegates to the UN from African countries have found that they are treated much better when they wear clothing that identifies them as being from another country. People are not fearful of visitors. You will be seen as American, first and foremost, and a student, and most people will be happy that you're there. Much of the problems you read about have to do with resentment and fear of the Muslim immigrants from Africa and the middle east. However, don't be surprised if people have stereotypes of African Americans. They see U.S. tv and movies, and may very possibly assume that you play basketball or something. That's just lack of knowledge, not prejudice. I've encountered that in China among people with the best of motives.
I'm part Swedish(ethnically). I don't hate blacks. But I want them to stay with other blacks in their own countries. We don't need your genetic flotsam.
We aren't very good at racism over here. H&S never let us do that whole burning crosses stuff, sadly. Might have been fun!!
No, not really. Certainly not compared to the US.
Hmmm, are millions of people racist?
- Probably!
