Most people love the place, so there are just far too many tourists - and petty thieves who live far too freely off the less street-wise foreigners.
Barcelona is very unlike the rest of Spain because it's not actually Spain, but Catalonia.
Catalonia has a different language, Catalan, which is official, and an own culture and identity. Still an autonomous region in Spain, it's going to become an independent country in some years time.
