Best place for summer holiday in the UK?

Posted at: 2015-06-30
I live in the uk but ive never really been travelling around England to see what other places are like. Just wanted to ask according to experiences or recommendation where is the best place to go for a summer holiday in the uk. Anything that has to do with summer activities or beaches or fayres or theme parks would be a great suggestion.

Thank you

It is delightful to see someone wants to explore Britain instead rushing off abroad. We have "best places" under every bush. Please drop the theme parks - they are all plastic copies with expensive entrance fees. All around you there are wonderful real events that cost little or nothing.

Practical suggestions:

1. Lake District is utterly wonderful, especially if you get away from the tourist traps in Windermere town, Ambleside, and Keswick. Go west to Coniston. Wasdale is spectacular. Duddondale is empty even on a summer Bank Holiday weekend

2. Visit a County Agricultural Show to see England's roots. Really excellent people watching. Animals tarted up for judging. And you haven't lived till you've seen ferret racing and a harness scurry.

3. Get yourself the Good Pub Guide. On outings to country pubs, never go to a bad pub ever again.

4. Walk some of the National Trails. Historic routes, fabulous views, lovely countryside, restores the soul.http://www.nationaltrail.co.uk/

5. Scottishh= Highlands North West coast. Drive the route from Ullapool to Durness. One of the world's last empty wildernesses, lots of very good mountains, world's third tallest waterfall (but no-one has ever heard of it)

England is a wonderful country.

Here are a few suggestions:

Lizard and Land's End peninsulas in Cornwall for stunning cliff top walks and beautiful beaches (e.g. Kynance, Poldhu, Porthcurno)

The north coast of Cornwall between St Ives and Padstow for excellent surfing beaches (e.g. Gwithian, Perranporth)

The coast of Dorset for brilliant cliff top walks and classic English holiday resorts with superb beaches (e.g. Bournemouth, Swanage, Weymouth)

The City of Bath for Roman and Georgian history

The New Forest between Southampton and Bournemouth

Brighton (another classic English holiday resort)

The Cotswolds (for classic English villages and rural countryside)

The Peak District (for walking)

The Lake District (some of the best scenery in the world)

Blackpool (the grand-daddy of all holiday resorts, cheap, cheerful and tacky - I should know, I live there.)

Northumberland for big empty beaches, castles and big skies.

The Yorkshire Dales (more stunning countryside)

London for everything

Hiring a boat on the inland waterways gives you a chance to see the countryside and towns through the "back door". You keep active by handling the boat and working locks etc.

Devon and Cornwall for beaches - the North coast if you want to do a bit of surfing. If you pick a fairly central location, you can take lots of day trips to the many things on offer.
