In Croatia, the biggest international airports are in Zagreb, Split and Dubrovnik, though some airlines also can fly to Zadar. Dubrovnik is quite pricey, but still the entire country is relatively inexpensive and definitely safe to travel!
Dubrovnik is best known as one of the filming places for Game Of Thrones, whereas Split is another historical city and perhaps more for young people.
There are many good cities in croatia , but as you told that you need place near to airport, then i must say Split and Dubrovnik would be the best option for you , as there are many place to visit such as national parks, museums , beaches, bars and restaurants , and accommodation is also affordable , you can easily book a taxi at affordable price to reach all these places ,, If you need to book a taxi service then call at :

My favorite place is Dubrovnik and I think it should be on your list. There are so many other places worth a mention though and I don't think you can go wrong in picking just about anywhere. But other places that I have really enjoyed are Korcula, Vis, Brac, Split and Makarska.

Plitvice Lakes (National Park)
If you want scenery pick one of the islands or Plitvice Lakes (National Park). Look those lakes up on the internet you'll see what I mean.
