No! They're more like a highly aerated bread, made with an enriched bread dough that includes yeast AND baking soda. Having two raising agents creates the characteristic holes. The method of making them is much the same as bread, except they are cooked in a frying pan rather than baked. Not that I have ever done this as it's easy enough to buy them here (and I don't own any crumpet rings - it's more of a thick batter than a dough so you need them to keep the crumpets in shape). They certainly are, as Vicky says, reminiscent in texture of a natural sponge, full of large holes.
Which is the best part! Toast your crumpets and then immediately spread with butter, which will melt and run into the holes. Spread anything else on that you like but just butter is good enough for me. Your fingers will get greasy but that's all part of the fun. Your taste buds will love you for trying them.
I can't understand anyone comparing them to a muffin (or as you would say, an English muffin). Muffins are far closer-textured, and you split them in half - you don't do that with crumpets.
Make sure your crumpets are (1) freshly-made (2) hot (3) slightly crisp on the outside but warm in the middle (4) slathered in butter (it's proper when some of the butter runs down your chin when you bite into the crumpet).
A crumpet is really a rich sort of bread, much richer than ordinary bread.
Warning: you may get addicted, and be forced to stay in UK to satisfy your crumpet cravings.
No, they taste like crumpets.
Try them they are lovely when they are toasted with butter and jam on them.
It's hard to describe what crumpets are like, I would say that the texture is like a sponge, not a sponge cake but a natural sponge that you wash yourself with.
Don't let that put you off though, they are really lovely.
No, not at all, if you like pancakes then you will like crumpets, personally I don't like either
Crumpets are more like bread - these links will explain further.

Crumpets are served toasted hot with butter and whatever other topping you like, savoury or sweet.
Crumpets are yummey, toasted, covered in butter and honey.
No. They have a slight tang that is impossible for me to describe. The texture is very different.
Ideally, they should be toasted until they are crispy on the outside and softer in the middle. They are tasty just spread with butter. However, you can add anything you like.
Crumpets are nothing like pancakes. If you are American the closest comparison is an English muffin
They look and taste like warm plastic with holes, but are quite nice with butter and marmalade.
More like English muffins.
