Edinburgh (Scotland) question?

Posted at: 2015-06-30
My dad and my mum are taking me to scotland, I live in south of England, we are staying in royal mile? And I'm 16, what is it like? and what do I need to expect? Could you compare it to a London area? Will I enjoy it? Help please

You can't really compare it to London as it's very small by comparison, so you can pretty much walk or take a bus anywhere. It's Scotland's "windy city" as the wind comes whistling up the Forth, so take warm things to wear.

The Royal Mile is of course a mile long and runs between the Castle at one end and the Palace of Holyroodhouse at the other, with mostly shops in between and various landmarks such as the disused Tron Kirk and St Giles' Cathedral. By the cathedral is a heart-shaped pattern in the road marking the site of the Old Tolbooth, which until it was demolished in 1817 was the main civic building in Edinburgh. Sir Walter Scott called the building the Heart of Midlothian - so now you know where the name of Hearts football club comes from! (Not that their ground is anywhere close - you need a bus going west out of the city to be there.) Canongate Kirk is towards the Holyrood end - Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall married there - and at Holyrood is the palace and the spanking new Scottish Parliament.

There's more shopping in Princes Street on the other side of where the train runs into Waverley station, and as in any city there are plenty of places to eat. I don't know what you like so I don't know whether you will enjoy it, but there is plenty to see.

Don't be surprised by a loud bang every day at 1 pm. This is just the daily time gun being fired from the Castle.

The Royal Mile is right in the historic centre of Edinburgh. It is quite built up and there will be a lot of tourists about, but it's not excessively overcrowded or busy.

Edinburgh itself is a really attractive city and you will find the locals are quite a bit friendlier than in London.

Edinburgh is nice. It has nice shops and places to eat. It's very friendly. It's touristy, like London.

Beautiful City with loads of shops, places to eat and things to see.

Try googling it.

Smaller but nice city...

You will hate it as you sound like a brat
