So we got an exchange student from Germany 5 days ago. I have a question. How long does it take for the person to warm up to you? She seems to be shy and quiet even after a few days. Is this usually normal for an exchange student? (It's our first time having one and this was my top wondering question.)

It depends on the personality of the person as well as the country. They are more reserved with strangers in Germany, but it's likely this student is just naturally introverted. She may also go through culture shock. Just be kind and nice. Don't take it personally.

She's a shy and quiet person. There are people like this. Continue to be friendly, as opposed to pushy.

there is no way to give an accurate answer...certainly more than 5 days...may take several weeks. depends on the personality of the student and your personality. Just be friendly, not pushy and be patient.
