You won't be able to stay in any one country for 6 months or a year without a visa that allows you to stay that long. What's required/allowed for travel depends on your citizenship not where you live. If you're a US citizen rather than a foreign resident of the US, then you can find the requirements for entering and any requirements for a visa to visit and how long you can stay on the State Department website: http://travel.state.gov/content/passport... . In many places US citizens do not need a visa to enter the country as a tourist, but you cannot work and have to leave within a specified time. In the case of the Schengen zone in Europe, you can only stay for 90 days in a 180 period in the entire block of countries without a visa and then you need to leave. You don't get 90 days in each country. For China or Russia, you do need a tourist visa before you enter the country.
You can certainly travel to just about any country in the world, if you have a valid passport and, where required, a visa. But living in any country for an extended period of time is difficult as you will not be allowed to work. Check the visa conditions on the Embassy websites of the countries you would like to visit.
