No, it is not true.
The CiU party treated the recent regional elections as an independence referendum and only received 50 seats out of 135 in the regional assembly. They have had to join up with the ERC - a semi-communist republican group - but the two parties are actually poles apart.
Also Catalu?a is technically bankrupt and owes a fortune to the Central Spanish government who are rightly demanding certain terms and conditions.
Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia, officially an autonomous region in Spain (even if there is a small part of Catalonia in France), but a nation with its own language, culture and identity.
Nowadays most Catalans want to separate from Spain and I do hope this happens in some years time, of course in a peaceful way after a referendum. On 11 September last year, our Catalan National Day, more than 1.5 million people took part in a huge demonstration for the independence of Catalonia in Barcelona. The new Catalan Parliament has now a majority of seats of pro-independence parties.
Useful video, "Spain's secret conflict", even if after the afore-mentioned demonstration it is not so secret abroad.
No, it hasn't left. That said, Barcelona is the capital city of Catalonia, a province in Spain. There has been a long standing effort for Catalonia to become its own country (i.e. secede from Spain), however it's not been that fruitful. If you watch any of FC Barcelona's games, you'll note very strong sentiment towards Catalan independence - during the game its not uncommon to see massive, massive signs calling for independence, while the crowds cheers - they seem to do this at soccer events because 1) there's a ton of people and 2) FC Barcelona is Catalonia's claim to fame.
That would be a bit difficult, don't you think? The city/province being part of the landform and all....
@Mr. Internet: No. There is no PROVINCE of Spain, known as Catalonia. Barcelona is the capital of a province called BARCELONA. It is ALSO the capital of a REGIóN AUTóNOMA (equivalent of a state) called Catalonia (Catalu?a, Catalunya, depending on the language.) It's important, because they mean different things.
Like Scotland to the UK it will take years to iron out and if successful or not there will be those that are still unhappy
It's all a joke
No, -.-
I can't seem to find info on this, but I heard that Barcelona has recently voted to leave Spain. Please provide me with a website and thank you
