Help! Where should we live in London?

Posted at: 2015-06-30
In early August my husband and I are moving to London to teach. We will be working in a school in Barking and Dagenham. We need easy public transport to our school and to the city, and would like to be in a nice, safe area. We plan to rent a flat (not flat-share).

Any and all input is much appreciated!

Barking and Dagenham are not the pleasantest of areas. Take a look at Hornchurch which is better and nearby.

Leytonstone is the best of those. Unfortunately East London in general is the worst part of Greater London

Barking/Dagenham consists largely of council housing and is cheap for renting. Neighbouring areas are also relatively cheap. Better areas understandably cost more. Parts of adjacent Havering are somewhat better. Maybe Rush Green/Hornchurch/Upminster/Rainham are worth considering.

Rule is best to keep your commute to a minimum....Further out go, cheaper it tends to be.....WARNING..Is DEAR.....I taught and lived in SW London, sold a tiny flat and, for the very same money, in Manchester, bought a lovely Victorian house in a good area, which would make my poor misguided workmates eyes pop out of their heads.....London teachers salaries in no way make up the difference

Dagenham is the cheapest area to live in London as it is quite a dodgy area. It's known as 'Nam' to those who don't live there.

And your budget? Where you can live will depend quite a lot on this :)

Take a look on RightMove / Zoopla for location costs,

Has anyone heard much about the areas of Stratford, Walthamstow, Ilford and Leytonstone?
