How Can I Move to Norway?

Posted at: 2015-06-30
I know this is a broad generic question but I REALLY want to figure out how to make a big move in my life and I'd like to move to Norway. For the record, I am 24 and don't have tons of savings in the bank to make this a simple hop across the pond.

Does anyone know of any programs that are open to foreigners (I'm American) that might make a transition a little easier because it's part of one entity? Or anything similar? I know this is going to have to be well planned out but I am looking for any suggestions! Real ones, please.

I was considering WWOOFing but I don't think you make any money with that. You just get the housing and food and then work at the place at which you stay. I'd prefer something where I can establish myself and also make some money in the hope of staying over there is I like it as I hope I will.

Thoughts?? THANK YOU!

While hard, it is not impossible to move to Norway.

Your best bet is to get an education in one of the jobs that they need workers in, all of those are high level and mostly you will need several years working in the field as well.

If you are not educated in the right field or level, you might be able to find one of the very rare jobs that on your level, but that is harder still.

As American you can not just go over and hope to find a job that brings in money, you will need to get your paperwork sorted before you can work and most jobs will not be open for you.

That includes volunteering, so do check out the rules before you get your hopes up.

I think you should go to Norway for a holiday a few times before you really try to settle there, and yes, I read that you do not have much money. But moving across an ocean is not something you should do on a whim.

And if you are the kind of person to make the move you are able to do your own research. Try the sites of the Norwegian embassy/consulate for your country/area and search out expat sites for English speaking people in Norway. (Expat Norway into the search bar will do the job.)

Good luck.

The only realistic way for an American in their early 20s to stay in Norway long-term is to attend university on a student visa.

Really.

Check with embassy of Norway in your area (addresses on the web) for immigration possibilities.

Unlikely you'll manage it unless you have a skill that is not available in any European country. Sorry.

Nola_guy is right, it has to be a student visa, and you will have to leave as soon as your course of study finishes.

you can not without a skill no other European has.
