How do Icelanders treat foreigners?

I really want to go to Iceland someday and if I like it, move there. I am from the US. I really hope my question doesn't offend anyone, I just never know. Would I be treated equal to the natives? Are they friendly to people outside of their country in general?

I've been to Iceland 10-12 times (have lost count) and people are very friendly. I don't know more than a few phrases in Icelandic and people have always been nice and helpful, whether in Reykjavik or in a small town like Stykkisholmur

As for moving there, it's not easy. You need to have special skills in an occupation that an employer cannot find any EU/EEA citizen to fill. The best occupations for working in Iceland are geologist or hydroelectric engineer with an advanced degree

Icelanders have no problem with foreigners as long as they are working and paying taxes, and making an effort to fit in. Speaking Icelandic will be an essential part of that.

Here's the page where the Iceland Immigration Directorate describes what the deal is http://www.iceland.is/iceland-abroad/ca/...

Here is their First Steps document http://www.mcc.is/media/frettir/Fyrstu-s... which is a very through description of what life is like in Iceland.

You have to apply for both a residence permit and a work permit at the same time. A residence permit is not issued unless you meet certain basic requirements.

These include:

– You must be able to support yourself financially.

– You must have found a proper place to live (secure housing).

– You must have health insurance.

They are very nice and friendy people. To move threre you must either find an Icelandic spouse or be fluent in Icelandic and somehow have skills no one in Iceland has.

It's not as easy as you seem to think to move to another country. But I would imagine the Icelanders are friendly to visitors generally - I have a few friends who've been there and said so.

Great people..SO COOL....
