How many days do you need in Athens?

My girlfriend and I are mainly interested in nature and history. We want to see the most important places and also like to visit Delphi and/or Meteora. How many full days do you suggest we stay in Athens?

Athens is a big city and there is a lot to see ; - I had a fortnight there once ( with a three day jaunt to the Saronic islands next door ) and I still didn't see it all .

The Acropolis hill , Plaka and the open sites below leading down to Monastiraki and Thisseo would take you half a day minimum ;- the new Acropolis museum another half day .

The Archaeological Museum ( and getting there and back ) half a day .

The parliament building , evzone guards and the arboretum park next door , and Syntagma square another half day . A tram trip from there down to Trocadero tramstop will take you to the historic ships collection at Flisvos , by Phaleron bay , there is the wooden trireme " Olympias " there in a covered dock , and a huge armoured cruiser , the " George Averoff " to explore . That's another half day .

The shopping area between Athinas street ( between Monastiraki and Omonia squares ) is an interesting walk with the Fish and Meat markets halfway along a must-see .

One of the nicest things are the 24hr tickets ( a bit more than 3 euro each , sold in every underground station ) that give you unlimited travel on ALL the underground system ( which largely runs above ground ) AND ALL the new tram system , and ALL buses and trolley-buses throughout the greater Athens area . A very good way to get about and see a lot of the city . The " Athens Riviera " along the Saronic Gulf , the Olympics site at Irini , and the leafy suburb at Kiffissia , all worth a look .

To visit tha main attractions in Athens (Acropolis, the ancient theatre, plaka and the museus you will certainly need two days. It would be a good idea to meet the night life in Greece. There are many night clubs in Paraliaki street. They work all night and you will know the night life in Greece. About Delphi is 2 hours away from Athens and you will need to rent a car. From Delphi to meteora is also 2 hours maybe a little more. Accomodate to Delphi one day, visit the main monument the oracle, and have fun at night in one of the clubs. Meteora are in Thessalia. If you only want to visit Meteora one day is enough.

Three to four days in Athens may be enough to see the main archaeological sites and then depending the time you may take a tour that can take you to Delphi and Meteora for at least 2-3 days.

You can always visit the Saronic Islands with only a few hours trip with hydrofoil and get a taste of the islands Spetses, Hydra, Poros, Egina and/or Angistri.

Then you can visit cape Sounion on a daily tour in the south of Attica.

If you have more time an organised tour of Epidavros, Nafplion, Mycenae and/or Corinth and possibly Olympia is a worthwhile experience.
