WiFi is not that common, especially in cheaper hotels. You may need to use Internet cafes to use the Internet. If you are on the Internet, your apps will all work, but if you plan to bring an iPhone or something like that, check to make sure you won't get hit with massive roaming charges.
ATMs are very common and it's no problem finding one.
Most people do not speak English, but it's not hard to get around with English, and most of the sights will have English signs, brochures, audio guides, etc.
It's a pretty safe country. Pickpocketing and bag snatching can be a problem in Barcelona, so watch your stuff and you may want to wear a money belt.

"Do most people speak English as well as Spanish?"
No. And do you speak Spanish as well as English? After all, it′s you who come to their house, not them to yours.

Pick pocketing is a huge problem in barcelona. just be aware of your stuff, make sure if you carry a purse or a wallet you are well aware of it whenever you're out in public especially on the metro. put it in a front pocket and carry your purse in front of you.
besides that its very safe!
there are ATMs everywhere.
in the tourist areas everyone speaks english.
Don't expect refills on your drinks and don't overtip the waiters. 5% will suffice.
