It is - they are almost as well qualified as nurses and have specific training in what they do, which is to be first on the scene and do what is necessary until the patient can arrive at hospital.
The entrance requirements are 2 A levels and 5 GCSEs - virtually what you need for university - and then they will go on to a 2 year diploma or foundation degree, or a 3 year BSc.
Yes - spot on - I know someone who is a probationer paramedic - she has done 3 years of training but doesn't get the full title until she has some experience. In my view they are better trained than nurses, they can prescribe quite a range of medications and undertake a number of interventions that nurses are not allowed to do and junior doctors can do only under supervison.
That is absolutely correct. They save many lives and are often far better at their job than qualified doctors
