How to move to russia from the USA?

Posted at: 2015-06-30
I am an american citizen however my parents are FORMER russian citizens. My nationality is uzbek but i speak and write in russian very well. Do i need to get citizenship to move there? If so how do i get the citizenship?

1. You can get working visa (for that purpose someone must hire you BEFORE you move. And you will have to pass Russian language exam from the beginning of the next year)

2. if you speak Russian, then there is new type of permanent residence "for Russian speakers". You must pass an exam and after that in short time (few months) you will get Russian citizenship.

3. There is a program which is called "return of former compatriots" (those who lived in Russia before or their descendants). You will be given some money for travel and to settle down in Russia.

But remember former USSR is not =Russia. If you parents lived not in RSFSR or not in current Russia (for example, in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, etc...), then they have nothing to do with Russia.

4. May be you are Russian citizen but you don't know about that (may be your parents are not "former" citizens and they have just their passports expired)? You should visit site of Russian embassy (its version in Russian language) and read about passports.

You do not want to move there. Being an Uzbek in Russia is like being Black in the American South, during the 1950s

That to get russian citizenship, you need to live for 5 years on territory of Russia. For you live here, you need residence permit - it's almost the same passport, but you can't to vote with it. As i know, that you can get this document, if you have relativies with russian passport or wife, or you can get with help of employer, if you can to find job at first. But it's easy only on words, really you'll need to run and wait in queues for each paper.

Citizenship comes several years after you live in a new country on a long term residence visa. To get correct info, you need to contact the nearest Russian consulate and ask for the visa info.
