Bournemouth is NOT a town full of decrepit old folk. It is a thriving town that has plenty of activities and night (and day) life for people of ALL ages, and most tastes. If you want a "gay scene" then go along the coast to Brighton. As well as the obvious tourist and holiday trades there are considerable amounts of solid all-year industry, so the town does not "die" when the summer holidays finish.
In the summer the beach and hinterland are available to all, and in the winter there are all the usual bars, cinemas, clubs, theatres, restaurants etc. that you would expect in a medium size town.
The New Forest is to the east; that is a stunning place to visit, with some great pubs in the villages as well as the scenery itself. To the west there is Poole (an aquired taste I think) and the beautiful coastline extending through to Swanage and Lyme Regis (the "Jurassic Coast").
If you have a car then it's all very easy to reach, if you don't have a car then there are frequent train services through most of it and comprehensive bus services - but these are slower.
Safety is not a concern. You can walk around pretty well anywhere at any time without fear of being jumped by drug-crazed gangs or loony muggers. Of course, you must still take care in crowds against pick pockets, these are a curse of anywhere where large groups gather; and stay clear of drunks.
Anybody who says Bournemouth is a retirement town is about 25 years out of date. Bournemouth is a vibrant town with a complete mix of ages. Apart from the university and language schools, there are lots of large modern office blocks, good shopping, night life and fabulous beaches.
Boscombe is a bit run down but at the other end of the scale there are plenty of millionaire's houses. Most of it is in-between. The university is actually just over the border in Poole, which is also very nice and has some of the most expensive property outside London.
You will like it in Bournemouth and Poole. You can easily visit London. There is a direct link by train.
Greywolf as usual is 100 years out of date. Bournemouth is a very safe place and a very pleasant place with great beaches and lots to do. It is also very close to the New Forest National Park and has excellent rail services to other parts of the country

The crime rate throughout the UK is relatively low and the UK as a whole is a safe place to live and to visit, Bournemouth is as safe as any other place within the UK , you will be fine living over here. Enjoy your stay.
What does 'safe' actually mean? People ask this type of question all the time, but it's quite meaningless as everyone has a different concept of what constitutes 'safe'.
Define 'safe' and you might get a decent answer.
Bournemouth is a retirement town dominated by old people. Nothing exciting has happened there in the last 100 years The biggest danger to you is that you may die of boredom. However, it does have a beach, and the countryside inland is lovely.
Everywhere in the UK is safe. It's not like the USA
Of course it is. loads to do, plenty of people and the beach.
I promise you wont see a single gun ...except maybe the police ....and the cops never shoot innocent citizens ..great beach and good icecream
