Is England racist?

Hi, I want to study at a university in England. I've been told England is incredibly racist against Arabs and also anyone that doesn't look white. I don't look white, I have very curly brown hair and hazel eyes with long dark eyelashes. My skin color isn't necessarily dark but it's rather olive/tan. Do the English really hate Arabs? I've dealt with racism in the US but I've heard it's on another level in England. Is moving to England a bad idea?

Yes, it's on another level here - we are LESS racist. We have had immigrants from all parts of the former British Empire for years (at one time they could just move here because everyone in the Empire was a British subject), you will see people of all colours, and we all get on well and enjoy the fun of being diverse and multicultural apart from the usual few racist idiots. Racism is also incredibly frowned upon by English law - if any crime is racially motivated, that bumps up the sentence immediately.

Goodness knows who told you this but they've obviously never been here. Come on over and enjoy! Certainly at a university everyone will be far more liberal-minded anyway and probably ask you about where you're from because they're just interested. Especially once you open your mouth and whoa, out comes this American accent!

The majority of non-whites in the UK are from the former colonies in India, Pakistan and the Caribbean, (Which accounts for the incredible number of Indian restaurants.) People with ancestry from the north of India and Pakistan are much the same colour as you though they have (it must be a genetic thing - I DO know that curly or straight hair is genetically inherited) straight black hair. So you won't look that much out of place, not in any big city at any rate, where it is pretty much socially unacceptable to be racist.

Untrue!

I'm an Indian living in London for more than 2 years now.

Have a bit of an arab look, grew up in Dubai, and english people are really lovely people.

I don't know what people mean be 'not much' racism here.

I haven't encountered any such of an experience!

England is one of the most multicultural countries in the world. There are huge communities of Arabic/Muslim people in many towns and cities. There are some ignorant people that sadly associate Arabic people with terrorism but these people are widely considered to be idiots by the general population. You will be absolutely fine in England especially in the larger towns and cities.

England and the rest of UK is one of the least racist countries in the world. People of all shades have moved here from countries that were part of the Empire.

You are far less likely to encounter racism on the UK than you are in the US. In the US it is institutionalised. Something the UK has largely managed to eradicate.

If you want to see racism, go to the Middle East - Kuwait, KSA, UAE, Qatar. You'll see far more racism there than you would ever encounter in any European country and the UK is probably the least racist of those.

Not sure who is feeding you this line, but it's not true,

Not as such, you may find a few racist idiots, but they are few.

We have been welcoming people from all around the world, for hundreds of years.

I have found the most racist people to be recent arrivals who find a multicultural society strange

Your been told wrong racism is far worst in the USA. The UK is a true

multicultural country the only problem we have in my area is that we have

to many people from Eastern Europe who are white

No not at all
