Is England safe?

Posted at: 2015-06-30
I've never been overseas before and I am traveling to England to see a friend of mine. I'm from Australia so is there really to much difference?

My main curiosity is:

1. Is their meat safe from supermarkets? I heard about diseases.

2. Are there any known risks with diseases?

3. Is violence high?

I can't really imagine England being any different to Australia, standards wise, besides weather ;).

1) British supermarket and butcher meat is probably safer than most you would buy on mainland Europe, our standards of hygiene and freedom from flies are much higher. This is why there is always so much fuss when something goes wrong - it's rare event.

2) We have fewer diseases than anywhere closer to the equator. Our national general standard of health is high. When we do get disease outbreaks it tends to be things like flu or colds rather than the nasty things like eboa etc. Always carry a small bottle of antiseptic hand cleaning gel with you for use before you eat, after you have travelled on trains or buses etc. to protect yourself against transmission of flu virus.

3) Street violence is much lower than in many other countries, even European ones; and is a tiny fraction of places like the USA or South Africa. There are places in large cities where you should not go at night, and you must always be aware of pick-pockets in crowds. Avoid ckub and pub turn-out times in some (not all) city centres and you should be as safe as the rest of us.

Note that we do not have any sort of domestic gun culture and is also very rare for an ordinary person (ie not a criminal) to carry any sort of weapon. Our courts and police do not recognise "self defence" as an excuse for carrying a weapon, knife or pepper spray. This is one reason why our streets are so safe from random mugging and violence - there are very few weapons for the bad guys to steal. It works.

4) England is like Australia in many ways but there are some differences that you must appreaciate in order to understand why English people are NOT like Australians:

a) We are very overcrowded. Our population density is many times greater that Australia. That brings congestion and stress.

b) As a result of government "initiatives" since the end of World War 2 the population has increased by 2/3. About half of this is due to immigration. The result is that we are "multi-cultural". This causes social stresses in some places where immigrant cultures have refused to integtrate.

c) Our weather is not comparable to Australia. We are a group of islands to the west of a large land mass so our weather tends to come from the west and north. It is very flexible and can be very different between locations which are close as 50 miles.

d) Most Brits cannot tell the difference between an Australian and a New Zealander. But these days they tend to think that New Zealanders are smaller and either have hairy feet or wear iron helmets.

London is not typical of England in any way shape or form. Do not be "a Yank' and think that if you have seen London then you have been to England - you have not.

If you are going to Somerset then you must visit Bristol, Minehead, Bath, Salisbury, Taunton etc. These are typical England. You will think that London is a foriegn country (it nearly is).

Don't foget that there are other countries in the UK apart from England. They are even more different.

Of course it's safe. You appear to think UK is a Third World country. It's among the top 10 richest countries in the world. Australia is 19th.

It is not some kind of third world country over here.British food standards and hygiene standards are probably higher and stricter than most countries in the modern World including Australia.

1. I eat the meat virtually daily and I'm fine, no mad cow disease lol

2. Maybe you might catch a cold on the buses or underground, have some antibacterial hand gel.

3. Not particularly, though it might be wise to avoid some dodgy areas weekend nights (drunks).

Apart from the odd bad area in our largest cities England is a lot less violent than Australia. As in all developed countries most foods are full of chemical pesticides and fertilisers sprayed on to the land, and animals used for eggs and meat are cooped up in containers, fed genetically modified grains and pumped full of antibiotics and growth hormones so that they grow faster and in the case of cows, produce more milk. The bulk of the British population refuses to acknowledge these facts and prefers to plod on buying cheaper processed unhealthy food. I am bound to receive at least 5 thumbs down for this answer LOL.

The answer is to buy Organic food either from the chain Planet Organic in London or large supermarket chains particularly Waitrose and Sainsburys carry a huge range of organic food of all types. It is clearly labelled and should have the Soil Association insignia on it www.soilasociation.org. If you are in a rural area farm shops also stock organic food.

We have far better public transport than Australia including a dense frequent national rail system, and there is far more culture here. It will seem strange to you possibly that people make such a fuss about Immigration here, since you come from a country that was built on immigration and would not exist without it

Is this a wind up ? We are exactly the same as Australia. of course meat is safe, disease ??? do you think we are a 3rd world Country.

I find your lack of basic knowledge offensive.

UK

Either a bridge dweller or someone who is completely thick. Why bother?

Of course it is!
