Barnet isn't even in London. Barnet is in Hertfordshire which is a very safe county. There are nicer places too such as St Albans. I would definitely rather live in St Albans than Barnet if I wanted to live in Herts.
Barnet is a very safe borough. However I would not move anywhere without having a good look around first. The nicest parts of Barnet are Hampstead Garden Suburb, East Finchley, Finchley, Totteridge
North London is the glamorous part of London. Here you can find your desire places to live with a lot of London's historical landmarks, culture and architecture. So i think you can enjoy to North London.
Hampstead Garden Suburb is one of the most expensive places to live in London. That's where The Bishops Avenue (aka Billionaire's Row) is located

Barnet is not at all dangerous. Are you American? Anywhere in UK is safer than America, and Barnet is very very safe by UK standards.
