Is Umarov a Russian Last name?

Posted at: 2015-06-30
There is this reallly cute guy in my class and his last name is Umarov, I Have asked him if he's Russian and he said he is....I Searched it up and from what I could find, it is a Chechen last name

The guy in question looks more Middle eastern than Russian

Isn't Chechnya a separate country?

There are at least couple dozens of ethnic groups in Russia whose representatives can have such a last name. And another few dozens on the territory former USSR.

Just ask him.

"Isn't Chechnya a separate country?" - if you claim you can use Goggle, it would be a great time do it.

It's a russified non-Russian name (they have Russian endings, prefixes, postfixes, but not a Russian root). It's a rather common thing in the ex-USSR countries.

Chechnya is a part of Russia where most people are Islamic, which is probably why this guy has darker features

chechens dont look middle eastern asshole chechens are unique they have pale skin , chestnut or Redi hair..Are you a slavic gypsy who is obsessed with chechens. chechens and north caucasians are the most beatiful race of people on earth. most slavs are ugly and look like gypsy your anceters were raped by turko-mongols.

Internets says, that this surname forming from arabic name Omar/Oumar (meaning life). On the other hand, i found mention that this surname mentioned in paper of Ivan IV times among nobles (thought, i don't sure to the source), if consider that, it can be assumed that there is old indo-european distorted root "mor/mer" with prefix "у" that meaning "nearly death".

Whatever it was, there was formed russian surname with "-ov" ending.

Don't go in a marathon with him.

no, it is not

here is a list of notable names with this surname
