Is my plan for the future okay?

Posted at: 2015-06-30
I'm 13 and I have a lot of goals in life. I want to go to college and get at LEAST a bachelors or masters degree. I know It'll be a lot of hard work but I'm willing to study as hard as I can. I want to study Japanese and go to university for a couple years. Then, I want to live in Japan for around 4-6 years and teach english or something like that. I wan't to travel a lot and after those years in Japan, I want to live in London for the rest of my life. The reason I want to live in London because I just love everything about it - I know that London is a pretty expensive country to live in but that's why I want to get a really good job. I don't think I'll be able to make much friends in London, though because I'm socially awkward and Im worried that the Londoners will judge me because I'm american.. haha.I feel like it's a lot for my future. What do you think? Life is too short to waste on stupid things like wasting time on my phone.. Maybe skip out on Japan? I don't know. I need your advice! Thank you so much.

Making plans for your future is a great idea. The way to get there is by reaching short term goals, like getting great grades so you can get into college, then deciding your major. Who knows? By then you may have decided you have a totally new passion you feel the need to explore. Stay excited and open minded toward your future. I've had three separate careers and loved them all. And the part about being an American in London, let them judge you as the finest American they've ever met!

What's your citizenship?

If you don't hold an EU passport, the 'living in London' part of your plan is going to be incredibly difficult without skills and qualifications with which you can get a work visa. Think STEM careers and masters qualifications.

NB - London is a capital city, not a country.

You don't need to study Japanese to teach English in Japan. Any degree is okay, so my advice would be to go with something more marketable. However, you're still young, and haven't taken even a single college class yet - so just remember to keep your plans flexible.

London is not a country
