Is slough a nice place to live?

Slough Garden City is one of the contenders for the 2017 'European City of Culture'. The civic centre is on the UNESCO world heritage list.

NO.

Once upon a time (about 30 years ago) Slough was a very pleasant town despite the libellous poetry of John Betjeman. It had (and still has) plenty of jobs and is very convenient for Heathrow airport and London. It used to have a very good High Street shopping and entertainment centre, an excellent library and good parks and open spaces. The suburbs of Langley, Upton and Cippenham were very pleasant places to live.

Now it is dirty, run-down, cluttered, the parks are either tatty or built over, traffic congestion is severe, infill housing has increased population beyond what the support systems can handle, crime rate has gone through the roof (reflected in household and motor insurance premiums), shopping is a depressing experience, the better pubs have gone down-market, the council is dominated by "political correctness", surgeries and dentists are overcrowded, etc., etc.

But you can still get a good curry.

Slough is close to Heathrow Airport and just 16 minutes by frequent train from London Paddington, but the town itself is run down and unattractive. There are really great places to live just outside Slough like Gerrards Cross, Windsor, Hedgerley

No. The best thing about it is that it's next to a motorway and near Heathrow airport, and there's a railway running through it, so it's easy to get away from it.

Although in fairness there are nice places nearby, eg. along the river and in the Chiltern hills. But alas, they only serve to further highlight what a dump Slough itself is.

Slough is well positioned for London. It is adjacent to nice counbtryside. However, it's not a pretty rown by any stretch of the imagination.

Not according to John Betchamin....(spelling?)
