Is the crime really that bad in Madrid Spain?

I carry alot of camera stuff. Will I have a problem with theft?

Not at all. All the little crime Madrid has is because of domestic violence. I've lived there for years, I'm a girl and I could come back home by myself at 3 am with no risks whatsoever. Of course there might be thieves, but police is abundant. With the basic security procedures (paying attention to your surroundings, mostly) you won't be stolen.

Have a nice holiday

FACT: Madrid is 'officially' the fourth worst city in the world for pickpockets and bag snatchers.

The whole thing is out of control and arose with the previous Socialist administration who preferred redistribution of wealth by theft to benefits - after all theft affects foreign tourists and not locals.

Another problem is Romanian thieves who move freely around Europe stealing. The local police are only interested in fining motorists.

Years ago, I once complained to the Municipal cop in the Plaza Real about a guy mugging me with a hypodermic (I talked the mugger out of it - easy if you've lived in Glasgow) - the cop was not vaguely interested.

Yes. Like in any full-of-tourists place. Damn thieves everywhere

No worse or better than any other major City, just take care of your equipment, don't have everything on display.

No.
