Nevertheless, if you had the chance, of course I would learn a little bit of both. More languages, more culture!
Good luck!
Pick up some Spanish. You'll find that Catalan is very similar to both French and Spanish, and you'll probably pick up a few Catalan phrases very easily as well.
Spanish:
Hola (hello)
Buenas noches (good night)
?Cómo estás? (How are you?)
Catalan:
Hola (hello)
Bona nit (good night)
Com ets? (How are you?)
Spanish would be fine. Most people there would be comfortable in both, and probably speak French as well.
Spanish. It is a world language, not just a local one , so you will not be wasting your time.
Everyone (except some little kids) speaks Spanish in Catalonia.
Hello everyone!
This summer I am participating in a foreign exchange with a French family in the south of France. Although the whole trip will be a little over two weeks, my host family invited me to go to their beach house in Spain with them, which sounds quite fun. My host brother told me that it was in a small town in Catalunya close to the border between France and Spain; it sounds really nice.
However, personally I do not feel very comfortable travailing somewhere and not knowing absolutely any of the language, so I'd like to begin picking up on some phrases; just basic ones and a little bit of rudimentary vocabulary and basic grammar. And it also gives me a good reason to start picking up another language in general... But after some research, I really don't know what language to learn. I would prefer Spanish since I think it might be more useful in the long run, and I can already read it as I'm relatively good at French, but I'm still not sure.
So basically my question is: If I am going to Catalunya, should I learn Spanish or Catalonian, or does it make a difference? And, whatever language it is, do you know of any resources that I could use?
Thanks for the advice in advance!
