Leeds better than Manchester?

I will be moving to study. I've visited Manchester once but didn't really get too see it. I've heard it can be a shabby city, but I've also heard that about Leeds. I'd like some insight from people who actually know. Of course I'll be visiting both cities soon, but I can't afford to spend long periods of time in cities I would like to go to university in.

I love cities. I am a city girl. When I mention Leeds vs Manchester, most people say Leeds. Why?

What's different about the two cities?

Where would you go if you could go to either?

Which is bigger?

I have also looked at Bristol. But want to know more about Leeds and Manchester.

Manchester is about twice as big as Leeds so shopping and night life is much better and the city has a more important and international feel to it. That said Leeds is more compact, it has a lower crime rate and it's generally a bit more friendly and relaxed than Manc on the whole. TBH, you should really be looking at the course and the university and figuring out which one is best for you, not the city, as you will be a university student and spending most of your time in classes and with your friends at uni and not going shopping.

My son attended Uni in both cities, but Leeds is far better. More to do and nicer places to visit. It rained a lot in Manchester, and snowed a lot in Leeds.

Feels smaller than Manchester and some say has a bit more class and is less brash....Manchester is so NOT shabby...Only parts as with any other major city....Put it this way..WE love Leeds & our friends from there love coming over this way....Size? Hard when comes to fact so many places merge to form BIG conurbations...Greater Manchester is slightly more populous than West Yorkshire which includes Leeds and Bradford...The two join in their suburbs.....Greater Manchester & West Yorkshire both have over 2.5 million people...BRISTOL? Forget it...ZZZZZZZZZZ

I have lived in Leeds for years.

Like all cities it has good and bad areas.

Like other cities the more you pay for your accommodation the better the area you get to live in!

By far.
