London- should I go?

Is it worth traveling to and exploring? I have the opportunity to spend three weeks there for the cost of about $3200. It sounds like an amazing city. Would it be a waste of my money?

Dr Samuel Johnson once wrote "When a man is tired of London he is tired of life: for there is in London all that life can afford." That was a long time ago but it's still true. Whatever you're interested in, there's something for you. I think you could do it for less than that amount of money! Though as the nation's capital, it's not the cheapest place to be. Definitely come and see us! A city that has been around for nearly a thousand years (well, some small bits of it!) is nothing like you will ever see at home.

I suggest investing a few of those dollars in a good guidebook to help you plan what to see, and an A-Z map to help you just wander around and look, especially in the City - the oldest part around the Tower of London. Get to know the public transport - it will take you everywhere you want - and get an Oystercard to pay for using it. You can buy one online before you come.if you like and it totally eliminates all your thinking about fares. All you have to do is add more money to the card when it runs out.

If there are particular places you want to see that charge admission, think about buying tickets online in advance. It's almost always cheaper. Popular places have tickets for a particular time and that saves wasting time in queues (or as you would say, waiting in line) if you've already got a ticket. On that point, do NOT plan anything for your first day as you will be too jetlagged. Most flights coming this way across the Atlantic go overnight and unless you can sleep at least a bit on the plane, you'll end up at the airport in London about breakfast time feeling zonked, because your body clock still thinks it's the middle of the night because of the time zone difference. The only way is to get to where you're staying as soon as possible and zonk into bed! I always have to do this when I come home from the US and wake up about lunchtime. Then just explore the local area a bit, see how you feel, follow London time for dinner and bed again and you'll be OK next morning. It's nowhere near as bad going home - west to east is the worst.

With three weeks to spare, think about going further occasionally too. The famous university towns of Oxford and Cambridge are an easy day trip out by train, so is Windsor Castle (Windsor itself is a good example of a small English town - that just happens to have a whacking great castle in it!), and closer in but still a little out of the way is Hampton Court Palace. Going a bit further out will show you some of "England's green and pleasant land" from the train windows too. We don't exactly have spectacular geography, but green, pleasant and beautiful it certainly is once you get out of a city.

Well I live in the UK and I have to spend four days in London this week for work, I HATE the place, it is dirty, smelly, noisy, overcrowded and everything is far too expensive. I would put the money toward buying a car and then exploring where I live first

My Canadian cousins spent two weeks in london and loved every minute of it. They are going to come back because they couldn't see everything!

It is a fascinating city. I urge you to go and explore some of the the rest of the U.K. too while you are here. This is a beautiful country

Absolutely!

Worth the trip - sometime in your life, but 3,200 Dollars? I would think there is a cheaper way to do it, without compromising too much.

I agree with Cool Chick and you should go.

No go, you won't regret it!
