Madrid, Spain or Rome, Italy? Where to visit?

I have visited both cities and I would suggest Roma!

You are really lucky! I looked up in the official site of europe's most hated airline and I found out that from Marseille there are flights for both cities! You just need to check the dates!

http://www.ryanair.com/en

But Rynair is kind of scary! In oh so many wayys. But I survived!

I have checked also Easyjet which is a little better but also more expensive, but nothing!

I agree with Dart. Madrid is not nearly as old as Rome, so there's not nearly as much that's memorable to see. I spent a few days there, and the only must-sees were the Prada and the modern art museum. Rome, on the other hand, was the capital of the Empire, and you will forever remember your visit.

If you're going to a Spanish city, Sevilla and Granada are the best ones, although I also enjoyed Santiago de la Compostela and Salamanca. If you just want a cheap deal, Barcelona wouldn't be too far from Marseilles.

I would go to Madrid if I were you.

My mother was Italian. She would go back to Italy every year with her sisters. They never liked Rome, too big and freaky. Yes, Madrid is not exactly a village but I've heard so much amazing stuff about the place.

Also regarding "cheaper" flying in Europe. Do you homework first. If you are thinking about budget carriers like Easyjet, think again. Easyjet is famous for charging extra for EVERYTHING!!! Yes, I know Easyjet doesn't offer direct service between these cities but budget carriers aren't always as "budget" as you may think. Look into train travel.

I′ve also been to both of these cities-- I′m currently living in Spain (but I′m from the US) and as much as I LOVE Madrid, I′d recommend Rome. As a warning, Rome was super expensive! We booked a hotel room in the center of the city, but realized we should′ve booked something cheaper outside the city with access to the metro since it was soo easy to navigate. Also, never eat at restaurants near tourist attractions. That being said, the food was amazing and the historical landmarks were beautiful.

Well, since you asked in the Spain category, you're going to get answers of Spain.

But it really depends what YOU want to get out of your trip...Rome has far more in the way of ancient history. But Madrid has a lot of really neat things, too.

I'd suggest Sevilla, but that's only because I love the city. And Granada.

Rome is very beautiful, but the charm of Venice is unbeatable.

I am Italian and I live nearby and I can tell you is wonderful.

I have traveled a lot around the world and I can tell you that Venice is the most beautiful city in the world

its artistic and cultural heritage is invaluable them everything is art

I am from Spain , and i think than Rome is better to visit than Madrid ...

BUT if you can go to Barcelona i would recoment you to visit Barcelona =) .

I'm planning on visiting my friend in Marseilles either this summer or next summer for two weeks and during that time we'd like to catch a flight to either Madrid or Rome because airlines have cheaper deals to travel throughout Europe. However, we're really caught up between these two cities and I would love to hear what anyone would suggest if they've been there or have lived there. Any information would be helpful!
