Moving back to uk from Spain, unable to rent?

This is rubbish but asking a travel agent about property rental is a bit daft. You don't just use one estate agent or letting agent use everyone in town, don't expect them to find any places for you they won't, its just what happens to walk through the door that day,

Being on the electoral role or not is inmaterial if you move alot you won't be on it.

Also mind there charges, agents that is, don't pay until they have got a place you want and not to be on their books the charges are a months rent for their services of checking you history a months rent in advance and a months rent + for a deposit that has to go into a goverment deposit scheme,

Most places don't allow sub letting even though it goes on

Of course they should be able to rent. I lived in Greece from 1986 till 1998 and found a place to rent and I got a job when I came back. It would be very unfair if you now cant rent for 6 months, yet 2 polish I know came here to look for work with a child last year, and they got child benefit which caries on till there child is 15 or 16 even if they leave before with there 3 year old and unemployment benifits and were found a place to stay. Seems like they should treat people born in this country with the same respect as people who have never paid anything into to the system. Thats my little rant over and I have many polish friends by the way but its the system in the uk which is wrong..

Rubbish, they can come back anytime and find somewhere to rent from any estate agent, they will need a reference from previous landlord or employer and a credit check and must pay a months rent in advance and a months rent for deposit and depending where in UK they will live it will cost at least £400pcm for a one bedroom flat/apartment plus council tax of around £120 per month, they can register at any doctor and dentist, if they plan on registering with the local council for a flat/apartment they will probably wait for several years before they get one but as I said there is nothing to stop them coming home. There is a lot od Polish people that have moved to UK and they have no problem renting property from a private landlord, Good Luck

Why would you or they think they should go to a travel agent to get advice/information about renting a property in the UK. I wouldn't go to an estate agent/lettings agent to book my next holiday.

If I were a private landlord and someone offered me six months rent in advance, do you think I would be remotely concerned about their entry on an electoral roll?

As residents in Spain you can't just go back to the UK as if you hadn't been away. Check on the UK government website. Look for living in Spain. There is a section on there about returning to the UK.

All they have to do is look at any property rental website and rent a place. I did when I returned from Spain.

This is just nonsense.

They need to check things out , after 3 years abroad they will find their doctor, dentists and other services will have crossed them off their books so they will need to re-register

My mother in law and her husband have lived in Spain for the past 6 years but want to move home to uk in the next 12 months. They assumed it would just be a case of going to a travel agents to find a property to rent but apparently not. They've been told that because they are not on any register / electoral role etc that they will be unable to. They would either have to find a private rental, live with family here for 6 months or they wouldn't be able to come back! This makes no sense to me, people move abroad and come home all the time. Can anyone shed any light on this please?
