Name ideas for a Greek city?

Posted at: 2015-06-30
Hi, I'm writing a story that is going to be taking place in Ancient Greece, so I was wondering if any of you guys out there have name ideas for a Greek city? A few of them would be great :) Thanks everyone!

Names ending in -eum, -ium are not Hellenic. They are Roman. Therefore, avoid using any such combinations.

There are so many cities that can fit your story depending where you want that story to be placed. If you use any of the names in the link below, it will be wise to search a little about them since many of them had certain characteristics, applicable to them alone.

Alikokou

Many modernday Greek communities are named after plants , trees , crops , or natural features . There is a village in Crete called Selino ( Celery ) one in Ithaka called Marathi ( Fennel ) another in the Mani called Milia ( Apple trees ) another near Kalamata called Kremithia ( Onions ) , many places called Platanos ( Plane tree ) one in Ipiros called Aetopetra ( Eagle-Rock ) , the example " no " gives you , Litochoro = Stone Village . Anopoli = High Town , Ammos = Sand , Peristria = Pigeons , Kaimeni Choro = burnt village , and lastly Anagraphos = The village unrecorded in the Turkish administrations records .

Kataphractoi.

Stephanopoulos.

Herculaneum.

Siphai.

Philadelphium.

Theodoraki Polis ΘΕΟΔΩΡΑΚΗ ΠΟΛΗΣ

Cannot think of anyone more Greek than Hero Mikis Theodorakis - thus I've made up a fictional Hellenic city named after him.

The important point about the name ΘΕΟΔΩΡΑΚΗ is that it has the letters Alpha and Omega in it. This then connects our fictional classical Hellenic city with the coming of the Greek Orthodox world of their future.

Now for something Greek.

Oresteia - how to say it - ORE REST EYE AH!

"To know ourselves, we must first understand the Greeks." The Greeks and no one else, are the very foundation of Modern Western Civilisation - their values are our values - their philosophy - and all the rest including democracy, created by them for our world.

Only thing missing in our democracy today, which was enjoyed by the citizens of Athens, the right to ostracise a politician who did not live up to the job. If enough people voted to ostracise a person from the city, that person could then be sent out of the city for up to 10 years.

I know whom I'd like to ostracise but no matter, we've got an election in May 2015.

Hear this message from Athens - Democracy has one major weakness. Voter Apathy. If we do not vote then democracy dies and the despots and tyrants take over.

Vote - if your right and your freedom, won for you in wars for hundreds of years.

One final shot of Greek culture. This will not take long.
