It REALLY depends on where you stay in Spain (Barcelona is a ton more specific than some of the lesser-known towns), in addition to the activities you plan on pursuing. You might want to check out hostels for cheaper rates and check out tourism websites such as tripadvisor.com for advice from folks who've also been there.
Where is your starting point? Tickets vary according to where you are starting from. You need to go to a ticketing site to figure out how much the tickets will cost.
Two months!? Figure about $5000 for train tickets...less, if you have a youth pass. I don't know how the youth passes work, these days...check into both Eurrail, youth pass, and Interrail (The European version...I think it's still out there. It works differently).
Remember, you will have to pay extra for seats, and each train levies a surcharge, depending on how fast/luxurious it is.
For lodging and food, you can probably get away with as little as about 50Euros/Day (about $75US) Then figure out how many museums/monuments you think you can handle a day. Figure about 10 Euros each (I would figure 3 - 4/day). You won't spend that much. Again, there are deals for students, if you have the appropriate cards.
Figure out if you are going to spend anything on souvenirs...for yourself, for friends and family, etc. You might want to send things home, periodically. That will cost about $100 or more per box. (Postal service, unless you feel the urge to figure out where a UPS office is...of course, I found one AFTER I had already shipped off two huge boxes!)
Now, are you planning to party/disco/clubs? Depending on how much you plan to drink, you might want to figure up to around $100/night for when you do go out...you could get off much cheaper, especially if you just go to a bar, only about $20 - 30 for beers/cubatas. Women can often get into clubs for free, men have to pay cover.
If you plan to eat at fancy restaurants once in a while, figure from 10Euros up for that. You can go VERY expensive if you want. 10 - 12 or so will cover what they call a "menú del día", which is a full, two course meal including drink.
I know you came here for answers, but when I want info I use a lot of travel site's forums where users post about there trip and how much money they recommend bringing. I'll start you off!
Edit: wow that looked like spam. Sorry I swear it's not haha
Not as much as you'd think. Lodging and travel (by bus & train) are a lot cheaper than in the U.S., and food is cheaper too. The lowest price I ever got for a hotel room was $6 (though this was 12 years ago, before converting to the Euro), but $20 was more typical.
Over summer break I'm going to Spain for 2 months! I know the ticket for a round trip is $1000. How much more money would I need for spending there?
