Many places to stay in Amsterdam, alone or with friends.
Anywhere in the city center and quite an area around it if you are willing to use a tram or bus to get to the city center.
Nightlife is also in quite an area, not just one single spot.
In your case I would search a hostel booking site, like hostelworld or hostelbookers or a more general site like booking.com and select hostels if you want to share one room or also cheap hotels if you want two people per room (although some hotels are likely to have more beds to a room) and search for the dates you want to be in Amsterdam.
Read the reviews on all of the places you want to stay and see whether you like what you see there.
Some hostels and hotels are cheap because they are not good at all, most are just cheap because the owner feels he can earn more that way.
When you set your search on the booking sites you should look for red light district. You might want to stay there or you might want to avoid it, but you will have to make that choice.
There are some hostels and hotels that are often mentioned here: the Bulldog, Hans Brinkers budget hotel, hotel Leidseplein.
I do not know anything about them, search them and read the reviews.
The best (and cheapest) option is probably a hostel. You can often choose between a dorm (cheapest) or a room. Some of them have rooms for 2, 4 or 6 persons. And in a hostel you have kitchen facilities, so that saves money. Most of the hostels are in or near the city centre. The city centre of Amsterdam is very compact. On the site of the tourist information you can find the hostels. You can look for reviews on the internet. Once you made your choice its best to book in advance. Amsterdam is a very popular destination for budget travelers, especially in the summer period.

You can also find a lot of information in travel books, like the lonely planet and the rough guide. Maybe your library has one. Some of their information is also available on the internet.

Amsterdam is very compact, and the public transport system is very good. Try www.hostelworld.com for more information, but be advised that as a popular holiday location, Amsterdam is NOT cheap.
