Self defense in Europe?

Posted at: 2015-06-30
I'll be traveling Europe alone soon. I'm a young woman. I know that pepper spray is illegal in many European countries. Are there any other forms of self defense that are available?

I will be taking a self defense class, but I want something to protect myself with if for example I come across a not-so-friendly 200 pound man

In most or all of Europe you can have a mini can of hairspray in your coat pocket and I am told that is as effective as peperspray.

An other old trick is a bunch of keys you keep in your pocket, hold the bunch within your hand with the keys sticking out between the fingers. Best is to have a set of 'old' keys you do not have the locks for, so it does not hurt you when you do lose it.

But as said already, best defense is not needing defense, so use your eyes before going somewhere, most of Europe is safe but parks after dark and places where nasty people go for their drinks are not where you should be.

Unless you go wandering off into some very unusual places, you are much safer in Europe than you are in the U.S. If you're in Italy, guys may say things and try to get you to have a drink with them, but that's about the biggest danger you'll face. Be more concerned about pickpockets- keep your money, passport and credit cards safe.

Unless you are actually out on the streets in the bad parts of town and actively looking for trouble, you will not need hairspray or pepper spray or anything like that. Simply use your commonsense to stay away from such places - it isn't hard.

European countries are generally a LOT safer than America.

I used my crutches once when a man and women tried to snag my cross shoulder handbag on the street. Another time I stuck the end of my umbrella up a man's bum after he first grabbed my wrist to pull me down the stairs of a tram. I look weak but will use whatever is handy anywhere to defend myself. I live in Hungary and it is usually safe enough. There are weirdo's all over the world.

You can shout and scream at anybody in Europe for self-defense..!! Lol!!

An European...

Only Americans would consider Europe unsafe

The best self defense is common sense. Avoid empty dark streets , don't get drunk , don't show your money , keep your things in safe places and choose your friends carefully .

It's difficult for any woman to defend herself from one or more men, without a weapon.

Bits of advice:

1. ask the location of places to avoid, and,

2. keep your mouth shut.

Best defence is to avoid trouble. There are NO GO zones everywhere, but people is generally aware of them.... well one night I stopped near my university ad discovered a pusher, so do not take my assurance for gold.

If you excersie the same caution as you would at home it won't be a problem. Never leave your drink unattended though.
