Should I accept this job in Spain?!?

I did a similar program in Madrid, but my friend did in in Cadiz. You can totally survive and Cadiz is a beautiful place to live! How much teaching you do will depend on what school you are at but many teachers have done it without TEFL training.

Since everyone else is freaking out about the money. No, you won't be making as much money as a normal teacher. No you won't be on a HUGE budget. You'll make lentil soup and get free lunch from your school. You will have at least two roommates (We were four girls in a three bedroom apartment...my room was the size of a closet and I shared). Your Spanish will improve and you will learn more about teaching. You won't be working a lot and you'll have the beach to chill at (for free!). If you are willing to be flexible then it's a great chance to live.

You don't pay the resident fee as you're in some weird loophole (it isn't a student visa, but similar)

I have a bunch of activities on my blog if you need ideas http://eslcarissa.blogspot.com/2012/06/d...

Be really,really careful.

I don't know if Marrisa (?) lived in a cadiz outside of Spain but the figure you mentioned is less than you need to live on, even 1000 euros a month in Spain is scraping by in my experience. (Lived in Spain for about 8 years 2002 - 2010). You cant expect to rent anything less than about 250 euros a month apart from a delapidated room, therefore you will probably pay around 300 euros for accommodation. Food probably 60 a week (from a typical supermarket eg Mercadona) - 240 euros, mobile charges, internet, utilities - water, electricity, transportation will all add over a 100 euros then there are all the miscellaneous things.

I don't know what your social secutrity arrangements will be like this is things such as medical coverage - but if you are living in Spain more than 6 months you will be considered a resident. The contribution each month is around 250 euros. May be they will pay this - this is definately a question you should ask.

Most teaching jobs are from 1000 euros upwards. Personally I would say 1,200 euros is the minimum I would consider. The figures I have given are really the bare minimum to survive. I went and got a job in Thailand (then South America) less money but it went a lot further!

On the other hand many teaching jobs in Spain require 2 years experience (according to their adverts) and the main hiring season has finished, so it depends how desperate you are to be in Spain. - Recently a number of adverts for teachers required "urgently" in Spain have been posted here and there as schools probably have been let down by teachers who did not turn up, so check esljobfeed.com and other job sites.

Good luck whatever you decide

So as I understand it Meddeas is an agency which sends teachers to schools. The average wage for a teacher in Spain is around 1,000 EUR per month so you will be doing the same work as a teacher but paid far less!

Sounds a bit dubious to me. Why not get a proper job as a teacher in Spain?

The salary is OK according to the minimum wages. Yo cant expect to be offered more than a minimum wage from start, but you can normally later on get it raised - or / and get more hours

But you can not survive on that salary, you must be prepared to get some more income. Maybe private lessons as well or some other evening / weekend job.

Sounds impossible to live on.

Are you even sure it's a legitimate offer? So many of those are not...though from what you say, that at least isn't obviously a rip-off.

dont be daft ..course you cant do it ..you wont earn enough to pay for a room ..you need that per week ..does it sound bad ....bloody dreadful

I've been offered a job in Cadiz, Spain with a language assistant programme. (Meddeas).

I haven't any experience in teaching, just TEFL course and this will be my first teaching job, and would much rather be a assistant than a teacher!

Anyway, it all sounds good apart from the money, which is only 672 euros a month with no housing/flights paid for.

Also, since it's a grant, if i don't like it and leave mid way through the year, i have to give back all the money i get.

Does this sound bad..? Or should I take it?
