You can take it, but use your common sense. Touristic areas in places like Barcelona (my city) have a lot of "pickpockets." Nevertheless, if you keep it safe you will not have any problems and it can come in very handy when you're traveling!
Yes of course that is what they were designed for.Make sure you are not careless with your items and take out holiday insurance in case the worse should happen.
