Souveniers to bring home from Spain?

Posted at: 2015-06-30
I'm going to Valencia and Madrid for spring break this year, and need ideas of what to bring back for my mom, dad, and sisters who are 23, 19, and 15.

Fans?

Recordings of Spanish music?

Fans? Really? If your family is into that sort of thing...basically, unless they are actually going to use them, or the fans you buy are very artistic, they are pretty tacky.

Music is a good choice. So are books. If you wanted to get something like...cook books. I had a small son last time someone asked me, and she brought back a children's book I would NEVER have found here! It's beautiful. I love cook books. Mom, especially, might like one. They are even available in English. BUT: Whoever uses it will have to learn how to measure in European...metric is NOT a matter of simply converting measurements...things that we measure in volume, they measure in weight. Coffee table books of scenery, castles, the people, the sights, things like the art, are good for people who are interested in those things.

Perfumes. Liquor. There are wines there, that you can't get in the US, or that are much more expensive, here. Try finding out such things (and you can probably transport them, even if you aren't 21. But check that).

Artwork. You can find hand-done by locals paintings and drawings.

Food. Check what is legal, but what you put in your luggage won't be scrutinized too closely. Spices like Saffron are significantly less expensive in Spain than in the US, so if you know anyone who cooks, get some. Pans, like Paella pans, again, for the cook. And pottery! Ceramics are huge!

And, if all else fails, t-shirts!

Ceramics, olive oil, wine, music (either Spanish guitar or flamenco), if any of them are soccer fans you can bring them some memorabilia for the local team, leather goods, scarves, if anyone likes art maybe a coffee table book from Madrid's Museo del Prado or Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía.

Valencia is well-known across Spain for ceramics so you could give your mom and dad a decorative bowl or ornament. For your sisters, either a fan or if they are a fan of soccer, a soccer top.
