2. I have friends from Brazil and I can understand a good portion of Brazilian Portuguese . I was on an Italian ship and it is more difficult , but I remember things like " Bon Jorno " Buena Sera " and when they were talking about crew members. Of course the numbers , days of the week and other nouns and phrases are similar. Como si dice = como se dice . El mar = El mare ect .
The Spanish spoken in Argentina is very unique and will defiantly give beginners problems . Cuba , Puerto Rico and other parts of the Caribbean speak with a dialect that is loaded with slang and chopped words .

I'm not a native speaker, but have lived here long enough to have a fair idea.
1. Educated Columbian Spanish is probably the nicest on the ear.
2. Brazilian Portuguese.
3. Probably Gallego.

2. Italian and Iberian Portuguese. Italian because I speak Catalan and it is very similar and Iberian Portuguese because it is very similar to Spanish.

Central Spanish -- castellano.
Italian and Portuguese are NOT dialects of Spanish, and are basically unintelligible to Spanish speakers who have not studied them.
Castellano is another name for the Spanish language. Gallego is a dialect of Spanish and Portuguese. So someone who speaks Spanish (aka castellano) is going "generally" understand their own language better than a dialect. That's just...duh. (You even state, at the beginning of your post, that you are speaking to native speakers of castellano).
The country in Latin America with the closest to Peninsular Spanish is Bolivia, with Colombia close behind. But Argentine is closest to Andaluz.
Probably whichever is native to the area you're speaking in.
