the USSR (always called Russia, not The Soviet Union) and USA were convenient adversaries. "we need X". Russia has X. we need Y, Russia has Y. space flight, supersonic jet, whatever.
Superpowers- "we" had to have whatever "they" had. COMPETITION! MONEY, THE American profit way. Space Race!
why should we be friends? the PEOPLE seem to get along rather well. Americans in Russia Russians in America. there is profit in the Boogeyman.
USA is preventing Russia from rising to power.
Russia is a convenient enemy. It lacks power to fire back and its easy to slander for some crap even if the USA has "uglier" allies. In short it's too good for a role of a scarecrow.

Be it religions, langauges/dialects, political/economic systems or whatnot...
