Was Istanbul part of Greece?

No.

It was a part of the Eastern Roman Empire - Byzantine Empire.

Greece was also a part of the Eastern Roman Empire - Byzantine Empire.

Note: Do not confuse Modern Greece with Ancient Greece. The Modern Greeks are not descendants of the Ancient Greeks who lived about 2000+ years ago.

That's why it's best to use the word "Yunanistan".

No, it was part of Byzantine (Eastern Roman) Empire. The name Istanbul comes from Stanboule which means of the city. But it became Istanbul through the time because Turkish people couldn't pronounce s and r at the beginning of the name.

Stanboule > Istanbul

Smyrna > Ismirna > Izmir

Rome > Urum > Rum

Noooo. Istanbul is in Turkey.

No but before it was Istanbul it was Constantinople with a Greek majority and rule. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constantino...

So there is no confusion know that the Byzantine people were Greek not Roman..
