The answers by both Esther and guiri are correct. Anyhow, your question seems to presume that Spain has always been a single nation. In fact, several independent countries merged (and a couple of the northern ones would like to break off again). It would be easier to give you an answer if you gave an era more specific than "the old days", as Spain has a long history.
The capital was Amorebieta in the north of Spain.
In times of the Roman Empire, Tarragona which belongs to Catalonia became the capital of Hispania (name given to Spain by Romans)

I know the recent capital city of Spain is Madrid. But what about the old days ? Was Spain capital city located in Catalonia ?
