The people of Greece are directly related to the Hellens of Classical Greece - however, the Greek spoken in Greece is 'Modern Greek'. There are a few thousand 'Greeks' living in Turkey who still speak a Classical version of Greek, which probably dates back to the time of Homer.

The Greeks have an entirely inclusive and democratic culture.
Dont even THINK about treating them with complete respect and proper politeness , nearly all of them have a strong sense of personal honour ( " philotimo " ) and wont hesitate to slap down any unwanted attentions .
Plus they ALL have an entourage of male relations who will spring into ferocious action at the mere hint that some yobbo foreigner has been bothering them . The seas around Crete are 18,000 feet deep and there is no shortage of rocks to tie to ankles . And Crete has more deep and stony ravines on it than Kim Kardashian's Great Grandmother . And the police there are nearly all strangers who both wont be able to help you , nor will be inclined to do so .
I agree with the last two answers. If you try any shenanigans you will be in very serious trouble. You will think you have met Al Capone and his gang toot sweet. Its not a silly tantrum thing either, its purely a self respect and so unlike the yobbo British way.
They are not Catholic. They are Greek Christian Orthodox and you had better not mess with them. Cretan men are very protective of their females and usually when matters of "family honour" is concerned, they are known to be very violent.
Stay away and if youy can't, be careful, and if you can't be careful then prepare for trouble. REAL trouble.
