Then they applied "divide and conquer" strategy and Roman Empire was divided into 2: Western Roman Empire and Byzantine Empire.
Those, who covertly ruled Byzantine Empire then tried to "peacefully" enslave the Rus' people, too. Which they did... eventually, when imposed one of the abrahamic sub-cults on them. That lead to the death of 9 out of 12 millions of people and since it was difficult to cover up, they needed to make up some myth... that's how Mongol-Tatar invasion fable was "born".
