What's your opinion on American patriotism?

It's typical new/young country patriotism. I have no real problem with it - the USA isn't my country and they can do what they like. But seen from Europe it seems trying too hard. American patriotism seems a bit diva-ish and hysterical: putting your hand over your heart during the national anthem, pledge of allegiance in school, all those strict rules about how exactly the flag should be flown...to most Europeans it is a little cringey, corny, over-dramatic. You never see stuff like that in Europe simply because European countries are much older, more established, more QUIETLY confident in who they are. America is still the world's teen.

Don't get me wrong, I really like America. But the way Americans dramatize their patriotism - yep - it gets eye-rolls.

That's fine, but if another Bush gets voted into the White House I'm moving to Canada...

I think patriotism is good, it's nationalism I can't stand.

Tub thumping and worshipping the flag - not a very appealing characteristic. Jingoistic, imperialist overly exaggerated and insincere in a scary way, its what makes Americans look arrogant and insular. Not my cup of tea at all.

It's equivalent to fascism. I can't call it nationalism.

Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.

Samuel Johnson

Is all a bit over the top and too clutching the flag like a Holy Relic...We British are more low key. We get it.You love your country etc, but do not ram it down our throats please...Seen from the outside and inside (I have family there and visit) your country is too unequal......A LOT NOT to be PROUD of.....Innocent till proven BLACK?

It is too extreme in many people considering the enormous wealth of America is held by a small minority while I have seen some of the worst poverty in the World in America

Good for them,

But we in England/UK are just as patriotic, its just we do not need to keep telling everyone

Speaking first as a Christian, I think that other American Christians should love God more than they love America or themselves.
