The best thing you can do is know that they tend to be rather formal, more dressy than you are likely used to. Women wear feminine clothing. They wear a lot of flirty skirts and dresses.
Best bets: look on corte inglés website. That'll give you a good idea.
They don't wear tennies. They probably wouldn't wear thongs (flip flops) unless at the beach.
African American? That's possibly going to change things a little...if you are friendly, and learning the language, you'll be much more accepted there...there is a problem with the African illegal aliens (think Mexicans, here). But you won't look like one of them, because you're more mixed, surely, and your fashion is different, and your accent will tell them American.
Do not ask opinions. Have a look at Google Earth and see for yourself!
Most Africans here are 'Top Manta' people selling fake goods and pirate DVDs. So people of African origen should dress 'smart casual' so as not to be confused with them.
Africans are not very popular because of the fact I have just explained but black Cubans are popular. Just remember that Spaniards are not 'politically correct' and some Americans can find it strange to be called, "*****" and be the butt of suntan jokes. (I used to get 'Blondie', although I am not.)
My local bar is amazingly multi-racial by British standards.
Come on over. You will have a great time. Spaniards are just so welcoming to all tourists and visitors. Those learning Spanish are specially welcome.
As to not looking American. I suppose that your instructors are quite ignorant of Spanish culture.
Americans are popular in Spain and you come from a great country. Why do they (the instructors) think you should be ashamed of it?
By the way , if you are that bloody troll again ..you ar not welcome here.
Congratulations ! This has got to be the funniest question posted on here all year !
- Just out of interest, what did you expect to hear ? - That you should wander around Valencia dressed like a Flamenco dancer, or bullfighter, wearing a Sombrero and with a straw donkey under one arm and a bottle of Sangria under the other ? Maybe you also thought that we lynched people of non-caucasian origin ?
Lol there is no spanish dress code really but the spaniards do wear very simple clothes such as shirts etc and ofcourse africans are accepted this is Spain not South Africa LOL
Im going to Valencia Spain in the summer and i will be studying aboard and staying with a family and our instructors don't want us to look american. Also I'm African american so how do they dress. And area Africans accepted there?
