I'm highly interested in Greek mythology, so places connected to that will be great, and I would love to see some Greek culture. I would also like to visit places that are young and lively. And also at least one place with a stunning beach.
Have you got any suggestions?
Thanks
I have traveled to many parts of Greece so can tell you from personal experience. I may mention more than 6 towns and islands, but many of them are in close proximity to one another.
Some of the most beautiful and lively islands of Greece are the Cyclades. Mykonos and Santorini are the ones I recommend you see.
Santorini
-Go to Fira/Oia (very close to each other) which are filled with beautiful little shops and amazing food.
-See the famous red and/or white beach. They can't be accessed by car and require a bit of a hike/swim/jet ski to see.
Mykonos
-Also has some of the most beautiful beaches and most amazing night life in Greece.
-Old churches are spread across the beautiful town of Chora.
Crete
-Travel around Heraklion which has a big archaeological museum.
-Knossos Palace which is said to be where the mythical labyrinth that held the Minotaur was.
-Agios Nicholaos which is 70kms east of Heraklion.
-Chania which is the second largest city in Crete (If you have time).
Athens
-Go to the Parthenon.
-The Plaka which is the oldest neighborhood in Athens.
-The temple of Poseidon (if you have time).
Meteora
-Filled with beautiful cliffs toped with historic monasteries.
Do a little bit of research on the best places to eat at and things to do in town, but also have fun exploring these towns and seeing for yourself what they have to offer.
Epidavrus, Meteora, a must. Bestist beaches= Banana beach (large) Skiathos. Ligaria beach (Small) Crete.
In your quest of Greek places of interest and in view of your interests I would say that once you are done with Athens you can arrange a round tour that can include all the important archaeological sites.
So, there are organized tours that can take you Corinth, to Epidarus, Mycenae, possibly Tyrins, and Olympia, all of them on the Peloponnese, and then over to the mainland to Delphi the ancient oracle.
Some also include Meteora I strongly suggest to take part if you can afford the cost.
If you want further ancient sites then Crete is the best to see where the Ruropean civilization started from..
Santorini is an island destination that many people prefer for its scenic panoramas and sunsets.
Corfu and Rhodes are islands that have many pints of interest and also medieval structures worth visiting.
The Saronic islands are a cheaper way to see and get aquainted to the Greek islands. Egina, Poros, Hydra and Spetses are worth visiting because they are close to Athens and you can easy hop from the one to the other.
Persepolis?
