He has only 20 days vacation. Which countries he must visit?
All countries surrounding Germany are nice to be visited; it would depend where in Germany he stays. For exemple if his son lives in Munich I would go to see Austria, the Czech Republic, or Slovakia; from Stuttgart I would visit France and Switzerland; from Cologne Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg; from Hamburg Denmark.
Depends on what he's interested in and what kind of budget he has. What cultures, history etc.It also depends on how much time he wants to spend checking out other European countries. It depends on if he got a visa just for Germany or other countries around Germany as well. He needs to check before deciding where to go.

There's no 'best' countries - what is he interested in? Generally its worth spending a few days in each of the big cities (eg Berlin, Paris, London, Barcelona) if he doesn't have a lot of time, but he'll also need to take into account travel time and cost
20 days isn't a particularly long time. I'd say he should stay in Germany, travel around there (there's plenty to see after all) and spend his time with his son instead of wasting a lot of money and time on travelling around!
