Barcelona is not actually Spain, it's Catalonia, in fact we Catalan are going to be independent from Spain in some years time.
If you are interested in Spain, visit Madrid, if you want to discover a new country, visit Barcelona.
They are surprisingly different.
As a city, Madrid has the best museums and galleries by far, but has no medieval buildings whereas Barcelona does. Barcelona has the sea and great beaches nearby. If you include Toledo and Segovia as being 'part' of the Madrid tourist trail, then Madrid wins overall.
Dart said pretty much everything, but I'd go for Barcelona at any time.

I am going to Spain during spring break. Should I go to Madrid or Barcelona and what is there to do in either of those cities? I'm not interested in beaches.
