Which languages are spoken in Spain?

besides Spanish?

Languages which are official in the territories where they are spoken:

Catalan / Valencian: in Catalonia, Valencia, Balearic Islands (also abroad: Andorra, small part of France and a town in the Italian island of Sardinia)

Basque: Basque country and parts of Navarra (also in a small part in France)

Galician: Galicia

Aranès (Occitan): Aran valley in Catalonia, the only part of it where Catalan is not spoken as first language

Languages not official:

Aragonese: in small parts of Aragon, in the Pyrenees

Asturian: Asturias and part of Leon province

According to the Spanish Constitution Spain has only 1 official language: Spanish.

The national government also recognizes 4 regional languages: Basque, Catalan and Galician, because the autonomous region where they are spoken has also recognized them. There is a provision for this recognition in the Spanish Constitution. No other languages are recognized by the government nor taught in schools.

Not official are Arabic, English, French, and Portuguese-. All are spoken near Spain's borders with its neighbours.

'Andalu' is not technically a dialect. Dialects have a good few different words and constructions.

P.S. Just to add,

Mallorquin is Catalan. It must be, I can understand it when they speak slowly.

There are some different words, Dog = gos = ca. Cat = gat = mox. but not many. Andaluz writers are e.g. Gustavo Adolfo Béquer and Juan Rámon Jimenez. And more recently, Chiquito de la Calzada. They write in Castilian Spanish with a dreadful accent.

Much of the linguistic nonsense in Spain is because Franco taught everyone that Catalan, Basque, and Gallego were all dialects of Spanish. Total nonsense but many people still believe it. It may be because he understood Gallego so assumed that it must be Spanish but it was more because he wanted to unite Spain and would not let anything stand in his way. The only tradition allowed was Spanish Castilian and Andalucian tradition and culture. And remember, lots of experts believe that Portuguese is a dialect of Gallego - it may be.

Check this document. It's pretty good http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_o...

Anyway...Official Spanish is the Castillan, then as Recognised languages are Aragonese, Asturian/Leonese and Catalan but every region got an unofficial spoken language

Spanish, Basque, Catalan and Galician. That depends on the region but there are people who are from those Autonomous Communities but they just speak Spanish.

Galician, Catalan, Euskadi.

But there are various dialects.

In Valencia they speak something similar to Catalan, and Galician is very similar to Portuguese, due to their being neighbors.

In the Balearic Islands they speak a dialect similar to Catalan as well.

In Gibraltar they speak English, but that's English territory and a separate case.

I think, in some parts of Asturias, they also learn Galician [probably in the most western part].

Catalan.
